Anyone know how I can get a copy of the URC editor software for the MX-850 remote? My hard drive crashed and I can't find my backup file. I lost my copy of the TX-1000 editor package any way. There are a lot of 'Pro's' flinging poo at remote central about 'Dealers' giving it out as they are not supposed to be.

Word of warning with URC (Universal Remote Control) remotes

Edit to clarify my gripe, I am unhappy with my dealer but URC is definitely at fault too. They allow their dealers to charge exorbitant rates for simple programming. From searching online, my experience is definitely the norm. The analogy I used I the comments was if BMW started putting locks on the it hoods that only dealers could open (and the dealer doesn't bring this up during the sale) and then the dealers started charging $500 for an oil change, you would be ticked at both the dealer and BMW. /edit

First off, I have the MX-980 and its a great piece of hardware. However, if I were to redo my theater, I would definitely not buy it. Why? What they may not tell you is that the software does not come with the remote. Want to add a Chromecast or a Roku box? That will be $100+. Oh, you want the (free) software I'm allowed to give (at their discretion)? Nope! Its too complex for you to understand. Oh, you bought the remote and a 5 figure install from us? We'd be happy to let you pay us more money! Call URC? They'll patronize you as well and tell you to talk to your dealer.

After hours of searching online, I finally found the software. I downloaded the program file from the remote and was able to add in the source in 30 minutes (first time seeing the software, so it'd be faster next time).

If the theater store shows you an estimate with a URC device (MX-980, etc.) be forewarned that you will pay out the nose fro what is essentially writing a macro in Excel.

The dealers are allowed to give out the software, but most won't (and why would they? they've got you over a barrel if you want your remote changed). Even though you bought the remote from them and probably paid 4-5 figures for an install, they will still charge you.

The company itself (URC) will not give out the software itself and will point you to a dealer.

Both the dealer and URC will give you the excuse that the software is super complicated and you need tons of training to use it. Bull shit.

After several hours searching for the software online, I finally found it and once I downloaded the file from the remote, the change took 30 minutes (I had never seen their software before and if I were to do it again, it would be tons faster). Yes, I have a decent amount of programming experience, but the difficulty is probably on par with making an Excel macro.

bryansj,
Nothing is wrong with that copy, it's just that I no longer have that computer in my posession.
I shouldn't have to jump through hoops. I am not a thief nor a hacker. I just need to program my remote!!!
Thanks for the tips.

URC policies have been well known (and complained about) for years. At least they provide a legitimate way for non-CI folks (in the US) to get access to the software. That puts them far ahead of folks like Control4 and RTI.
I might type 2K for 1080p.

I have a old laptop (Dell Latitude C640) that I use to edit my remote. It is running version 1.12.334.0927 of the editor software, it is live updateable and works perfectly. I originally got the software when URC offered it but have since lost my installer.
I'm moving and no longer need the remote or the software... or the laptop for that matter so If anyone wants the laptop and sync cable, give me a holler. if there's enough interest I'll put it in an ebay auction starting at $1.

Recording free OTA TV for 'time shifting' has been here since 1975. Will there be DVR's to do the same when ATSC3 obsoletes existing DVR's??

Great, thanks. I saw a post by URC in their forum that the MX850 HAD to use the 850 editor. I suspected they might have been taking some liberties with that information.

We have lost our software to the remote and just got another TV and need to install our new stuff to the remote. Can anyone send me the link to the software? I have looked everywhere for a download and have gotten no where.

What does the age of the remote has to do with it? The software will allow you to program the dam remote. The history of the mx-850 is long, first released as the Orion, changed names to Aeros, then the mx-850. The Nxg nx-rm820 is the same as the current mx-850, it works with narrow band RF basestations.
If the model isn't in the software, you teach the commands, it doesn't take that long.

Everything if you wanted a newer designed remote with specific features unavailable in the older series.
Also, button placement can be a issue with the older remotes. I have a 350 and the lack of buttons and placement is a issue compared with a newer 900.
Besides, many don't want to bother learning each and every command to each and every device.

I have the software...

When I bought my unit, you could download the software no problem. It is silly to keep it from users. Why do that? If you are smart enough to program your remote, you won't pay a pro $90 each time. If you are not, you don't want the software and will pay the $$$. If you don't have a remote.... you don't NEED the software. It's just Silly of the company.

anyway... email me and I will help. I don't know if I have the latest version but it works on mine.
