Trophies
For the most part, the English trophy descriptions are faithful translations of the Japanese text. Here are a few notable changes:
Mario
His Japanese trophy description says he's 'about 26 years old,' while the English text mentions that 'his tastes have changed over 20 years of gaming...'
Yoshi
The Japanese description says Yoshi is 'neither male nor female.' The English text avoids mentioning Yoshi's gender altogether.

Birdo
As we've previously covered in our Birdo: Under the Bow article, Birdo's Japanese trophy explains that 'he believes he's a girl and likes to be called 'Cathy.' In America, games released after Super Mario Bros. 2 refer to the pink dinosaur as a female.
Bullet Bill
In the Japanese game, the trophy is called 'Magnum Killer,' which is the Japanese name for Banzai Bills, the giant bullets that first appeared in Super Mario World. In later releases, the 'Bullet Bill' trophy was changed to 'Banzai Bill,' but Super Mario Bros. was still listed as the game, leaving the trophy with a new error.
Daisy
'Mario Open Golf' in the Japanese text was changed to 'Mario Golf' instead of the correct title, NES Open Tournament Golf. Mario Golf was released for both the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color, but Daisy did not appear in either version.
Shy Guys
In the English description, 'play guitar,' 'play tennis,' 'steal people's toys,' and 'cause mischief' were added to the list of Shy Guy talents, which replaced 'wear blue, green, purple, and yellow' in the Japanese text.

Below are all the Mario and Donkey Kong trophy names from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Many of the game titles listed in the trophies' 'info boxes' were changed, so we've included those also. In the info boxes, you'll notice that the U.S. version lists the first American game appearance, whereas the Japanese version lists two games (whenever possible) that are not necessarily the first appearances.
The Japanese trophies use the following abbreviations: AC = Arcade; FC = Famicom (Japan's NES); FCD = Famicom Disk System (Japan-only NES disk drive add-on); SFC = Super Famicom (Super NES); GB = Game Boy; GBC = Game Boy Color; GBA = Game Boy Advance; N64 = Nintendo 64; GC = GameCube.

Notes:
- The 'Mario & Yoshi' trophy was only available during a Toys 'R' Us event in Japan. Using cheat devices is the only way to unlock this trophy in the American release.
- Boo: 'Teresa' comes from the Japanese verb tereru (to be shy).
- Coin: The Coin trophy has '(Mario)' in its Japanese name because the Smash Coin from Super Smash Bros. Melee is also called 'Coin' in the Japanese version. Also note the minor inconsistency in the U.S. version's trophy: Instead of listing 'Arcade 1983' like the other Mario Bros. items, it just says '1983.'
- Freezie: The icy Mario Bros. enemy and Articuno from Pokémon are both called 'Freezer' in the Japanese game, so Freezie's Japanese trophy has '(Mario)' in its name. It's interesting to note that Nintendo's Japanese Mario Bros. page calls him Freeze (フリーズ), not Freezer.
- Koopa Paratroopa: Patapata is onomatopoeia for a flapping sound.
- Megavitamins: Called 'Capsule' in Japan, the Megavitamins trophy has '(Dr. Mario)' in its Japanese name to further distinguish it from the Capsule item that appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Pak E. Derm: 'Tōsanzō' comes from tōsenbō (standing in the way) and zō or zōsan (elephant).
- Raphael Raven: Based on the Japanese trophy name ('Kyū-chan'), this is a Raven, not 'Raphael Raven.' In Super Mario World 2, Raphael the Raven ('Big Kyū-chan') was the boss of World 5.
- Thwomp: 'Dossun' comes from dosun (a 'whomp' sound).
Thanks to The Chef for helping out with trophy details.
